Year-End Update and Appeal .. Dear Friends, Many of you will have heard by now of the crisis we have been experiencing over the last month here in south China. News about neglect and abuse at a 'private care facility' in another part of our province came out last month and quickly 'went viral.' (This was a local-run facility that had nothing to do with New Day or any other organization that we have connections with.) The government's response was to shut down all private foster care centers throughout our province. This action was swift and to our knowledge has been without exception. We (and our partner orphanages) worked very hard to keep this from affecting our children. We first were required to only return the children who had already had surgery and were in stable health. As hard as that was, we were at least hopeful that we would be able to keep the children who were frail and still in need of medical care. However, as this event continued to escalate, we were eventually required to return all of our children, even the ones most at risk. What Now? First, we are doing all we can to help the children who recently left us, especially the ones in need of surgery and special medical care. Four of our best trained nannies are on temporary assignment with these children at their home orphanages and local hospitals. We are committed to funding and arranging the surgeries still needed for these children. We have opened a special fund to help with the two most immediate and complex of these surgeries - Sawyer and Maya. You can learn more at this link. Secondly, we are actively exploring new ways to continue helping children born with serious medical issues. The need is very real, and our partner orphanages are all asking for our continuing help. We will keep you updated as these new programs develop. Doug Bush and the New Day South Team |
